Reign Training Center’s Rachael Cummins made a successful drop down to the flyweight division on Friday night at Tuff-N-Uff: “Festibrawl 2” in Las Vegas, Nevada. Cummins needed just 31 seconds to submit Chrissy Lim to advance to the finals of the Tuff-N-Uff 125-pound women’s tournament.
In the second 125-pound tournament semi-final, Christine “La Fiera” Ferea took a Unanimous Djecision win over Kristi “Violencia” Lopez. Meanwhile, Veronica “The Heartbreaker” Rothenhausler earned her second straight five-second KO by defeating Ashlee Evans-Smith for the 145-pound belt.
Cummins (1-2-0) walked through Lim’s (0-1-0) punches early on and clinched. She secured a bodylock and tripped Lim to the mat, then quickly worked for a rear-naked choke. Lim tried to roll, but she gave up her back in the process and Cummins locked in the choke for the victory just 31 seconds into the fight. The win was Cummins’s first as an amateur after a pair of setbacks at higher weights. She now moves on to the 125-pound tournament final on August 18th.
Ferea (2-0-0) was aggressive throughout the bout with Lopez (2-1-0) and landed stiff jabs in the opening round. Lopez clinched up in round two and part of round three, but Ferea stayed on her feet and landed strikes whenever possible. The latter two rounds were closer than the first, but all three judges scored the fight in favour of Ferea after three 2:00 rounds. She remains unbeaten and earns a spot in the final.
In the lone women’s title fight on the card, Rothenhausler (3-0-0) once again showed off her devastating right cross. She dropped Evans-Smith (5-4-0) with the first punch of the fight and followed with two more punches to her kneeling opponent’s face before referee Joe Sullivan dove in for the save. Rothenhausler has won all three of her amateur fights by first-round knockout, including two five-second KOs in a row. She has eyes on turning pro later this year. Evans-Smith had looked to capture her second Tuff-N-Uff title after winning the 140-pound strap in April, but it was not to be.
Tuff-N-Uff’s next event takes place on August 18th in Mesquite, Nevada, where a new 125-pound women’s champion will be crowned when Cummins faces Ferea in the tournament finale.
